Estate planning is the process of organizing your financial and legal affairs to ensure your assets are distributed according to your wishes after your passing. It also involves planning for situations like incapacity (if you are unable to make decisions for yourself due to illness or injury). A professionally-created estate plan ensures that your family is taken care of, your legacy is protected, and your financial goals are met.
For busy professionals like you, estate planning isn’t just a “nice-to-have.” It’s essential to ensure your children, assets, and healthcare decisions are managed the way you want, without leaving things to the time-consuming, expensive, and sometimes contentious probate court process.
-
We hear you, it’s 2025 and most working families do not own a sprawling estate, real estate portfolio, or multi-million dollar accounts subject to the estate tax. Your “estate” in this context includes things many people own: pets, a car, bank accounts, musical instruments, or jewelry. Having a plan will help you pass all of these assets to your loved ones without expensive and lengthy probate court proceedings.
“Estate planning” also refers to planning and legal documents that go far beyond passing on personal property upon one’s death. Much of what we will do is plan for your lifetime— who is qualified to make healthcare decisions in the event you cannot speak for yourself, and who should make financial decisions if you become incapacitated. This is a chance to plan for scenarios which can strike anyone unexpectedly — while reflecting on the property, legacy, and memories we want to pass on to our loved ones in the hopefully distant future.
-
One of the key elements of estate planning is nominating guardians for your children. We will work with you to select and designate guardians, giving you peace of mind that your children will be safe and loved by those you choose. Unlike a simple will, a living trust can ensure that your children receive structured financial support when they need it, in a manner that makes sense for your family. Trusts can even be structured to provide distributions when beneficiaries reach a certain age, or on reaching milestones such as college graduation or marriage.
